Barnsley: New boy Bahre set for gentle introduction to English game

If Mike-Steven Bahre was looking forward to the blood and thunder of English football, then his possible Barnsley debut might just miss the mark on that one.

The German, who beat the loan deadline last Friday to join from Hannover, could be involved as the Reds begin their Checkatrade Trophy campaign against Oldham on Tuesday night.

This is a competition that Barnsley have fond memories of, winning it in the first part of their Wembley double win 2016, but it has now changed beyond all recognition with the introduction of group stages and Under-23 teams.

It is likely that boss Daniel Stendel will also change his team beyond all recognition, with fringe players expected to get the nod.

The game, which kicks-off at 7.30pm, is likely to be lacking intensity and atmosphere at Boundary Park and not what Bahre would have had in mind when moving from Germany.

Whether or not the 23-year-old is selected remains to be seen, but either way Stendel knows exactly what to expect when he does pull a Barnsley shirt on.

'I know him, he played a very good style,' he said. 'He will make our team better, he can play in centre midfield, in number 10 or a winger.

'I think it's good when we have an extra player for our playing style. Next week we have two players playing international games and we need extra players who play the style at a high level.

'I think that's what Mike can add.'

One player who will not feature at Boundary Park is Cauley Woodrow, who is battling an injury.

Woodrow arrived at Oakwell 10 days ago but has not featured in either of the club's two games since.

Stendel, though, hopes to get his hands on the former Fulham man within a fortnight.

'We hope that Cauley Woodrow can play in two weeks and then we have more options in attack,' Stendel added.

'It would be good to have a second player who knows where the goal is or can score. We have a good squad and I am satisfied.'
