Barnsley MP objects to Government plan for firefighters’ pensions

Barnsley MP Michael Dugher has opposed Government changes to firefighters’ pension regulations.

The Government wants firefighters to work longer before they draw their pensions but the Fire Brigades Union claims they could lose their jobs if they are no longer deemed fit front for the frontline.

It claims there are no longer any back office or community jobs for aging or unfit firefighters because of Government funding cuts leading to job losses to save money.

Labour MP Mr Dugher, whose constituency is Barnsley East, said: “Firefighters risk their lives to save ours and they deserve better than this.”

Firefighters have gone on strike repeatedly after being locked in dispute with the Government for three years.
