Barnsley MP Michael Dugher has spoken of his concern at the rise in youth unemployment in the town.

There were 1,105 young unemployed people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance across Barnsley in February, up from 885 in December.

In Mr Dugher’s Barnsley East constituency there were 426 young people claiming JSA, up from 315 in December.

Across South Yorkshire the total number of people claiming JSA has dropped over recent years.

Mr Dugher said: “Labour recognises that the country needs to invest in young people which is why Labour’s Compulsory Jobs Guarantee, funded by a tax on bank bonuses, will ensure a real, paid job for every 18 to 24 year old who has been claiming JSA for more than a year.”
