Barnsley Labour MP Michael Dugher has called on the government to increase high-quality apprenticeships.

Mr Dugher spoke out for National Apprenticeship Week and said more money needs to be invested in creating apprenticeship schemes.

Unemployment statistics show in Barnsley East there are 665 youths aged 18 to 24 out of work and more than 1,670 in Barnsley have been unemployed for over a year.

Mr Dugher said: “The government needs to do more to help firms create the high quality apprenticeship opportunities young people desperately need.”
