A man has died in hospital from head injuries he sustained in a confrontation outside his home.

Dean Armitage, 49, lost his fight for life after several weeks in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on Friday.

He was injured after an incident where it is thought Mr Armitage stopped an unknown man on Skiers View Road, Hoyland, Barnsley believing he was attempting to break into his car at 3.15am on Sunday July 21.

David Sindall, 33, was arrested and initially charged with burglary and grievous bodily harm.

A police spokesman said: “The assault charge is now expected to be changed to murder or manslaughter as the investigating officers liaise with the Crown Prosecution Service.”
