The 45-year-old was found with gunshot wounds to his knees in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, in March.

But police have today revealed that their investigation led to the discovery that the victim was assaulted by a number of men at his home in Strafford Walk, Dodworth.

He was then bundled into a vehicle and driven to Scotland, where he was dumped after being shot.

Police Scotland said the man suffered ‘life changing injuries’ and may never be able to walk again unaided.

Today the force has issued E-fits of three men wanted as part of the abduction and attempted murder inquiry.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Boyd said today: “This shooting was a shocking incident, which occurred in broad daylight, yards from a busy town, homes and a supermarket.

“This man was systematically assaulted, threatened and was in fear for his life. He has been left with life-changing injuries and may be unable to walk unaided again.

“We’re still piecing together the timeline, mapping out the full journey which the attackers and the victim took and have carried out a significant amount of enquiries since the incident, which has included checking CCTV and speaking to local people in both Barnsley and East Kilbride.

“I appreciate the incident happened a number of months ago, however I would again like to take this opportunity to ask anyone who may have been in the area of Strafford Walk in the early evening of Wednesday, March 11 into the early hours of Thursday, March 12, who may have heard anything suspicious, or who may have witnessed a number of men near the bungalow where the victim lived.

“We are issuing e-fits of three individuals who we wish to trace who may have critical information that could help with our enquiries. Do you recognise these individuals? Can you give us names of these people? If you can, please call us.

“To make it clear, we do believe that this attack was targeted and was not a random assault.

“Police Scotland is working with our colleagues in South Yorkshire and other forces England in a thorough and co-ordinated investigation to ensure that all investigative opportunities are exploited to identify and prosecute those responsible for this attack and also to ensure that the continued safety of local communities in both areas is a priority.

“The people who carried out this abduction and shooting are merciless, and have absolutely no regard for public safety. They have access to firearms as evidenced by this incident and have no hesitation in carrying out extreme violence.

“They are dangerous individuals and must be caught.”

Superintendent Shelley Hemsley, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “Incidents of this nature are thankfully extremely rare in Barnsley and while we believe that this was targeted, it is vitally important those responsible are identified.

“I would ask people to look at the images and if you recognise any of the men or you remember seeing anything which you believe may be related to this incident, which took place in Strafford Walk, Dodworth, on March 11, please contact Police Scotland.”
