The Liverpool youngster has previously spent time on loan at Coventry, but had never before played in the second tier of English football until this season.

And the 20-year-old is thoroughly enjoying himself at Oakwell, as part of a young dressing room.

Kent, who has scored once in 17 appearances this season, said: “Barnsley have given me a chance to challenge myself against really tough teams and prove I’m capable enough.

“This is a challenge I’m relishing and hopefully prepares me for the next step.”

Kent has recognised the step up in standard from his time in League One last season.

But he believes the squad has proven they are good enough to compete at this level.

He added: “It’s a lot more difficult in the Championship. It’s much more physical and the players are tougher, but the boys have been performing really well.

“We’ve been matching most teams in every department.”

Last season Kent scored just one goal in 17 appearances at the Ricoh Arena and he has the exact same stats for the Oakwell club.

Goals and assists are what managers look for in their front players and Kent admits it is the one area of his game he is trying to improve the most.

And he is delighted the Melwood coaching staff are still following his progress.

“I feel like my performances are getting stronger but there’s nothing to show for it,” said Kent.

“The coaching squad at Liverpool is very good and are monitoring my game. Every week I get feedback from them about what aspects of my game need improving.”
