Barnsley hoping for more clean sheets, says keeper Davies

Barnsley shot-stopper Adam Davies has admitted the first team breathed a collective sigh of relief after keeping their first clean sheet for four months.

A fine 3-0 win at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday - which included a penalty save by Davies, was warmly welcomed at Oakwell as the Reds rose to 17th in the table and extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

“It was so nice to keep a clean sheet at long last, we’ve waited a long time to do that,” admitted Davies.

“We all enjoyed that win and we deserved the points. We played well in the first half and kept them out in the second half to get that win and the cleansheet we all wanted.

“We had really good spells off the ball and we held our own in the second half when we knew they were going to come out and try and get at us.

“We got the third goal and killed the game. We saw it out professionally and defended really well. It was hard for them to break us down.

“I feel as though a clean sheet has been coming for a few weeks. Hopefully there’s many more of them to come.”

And now, having ended a run of 20 games without keeping a clean sheet, former Sheffield Wednesday keeper Davies is confident the Reds can keep pushing up League One and finish the season strongly after a poor start.

“We’re unbeaten in the New Year, so hopefully we can keep winning and climbing up the table and get us high as we can,” added Davies.

“The run we’re on at the moment shows our resilience.

“We’ve stuck together during hard times and now we’re looking good. We’ve just got to keep that going now.

“There’s still 20 games left and, with this league, you just never knows what’s going to happen.

“Anyone can beat anyone in this division, so if we can get a bit of a run going and some consistency, we can get right up there. You never know.”

Next up for the Reds is a home clash with Rochdale at Oakwell this Saturday, followed by an away fixture against Bradford City on Tuesday, January 26.
