Barnsley hopes dashed by defeat

BARNSLEY'S hopes of retaining the Yorkshire League title have drifted further away after they lost at Driffield and it looks as if their crown is heading for York who won again to open up a 21-point gap.

Driffield's Yorkshire opener Andrew Gale scored 110 and teammate Richard Pyrah 61 to help them to 246-6. Mark Lawson took 4-88.

Barnsley, losing their first wicket with just three runs on the board, slumped to 27-5 with Pyrah taking four wickets in four balls in the 16th over.

Alex Morris made an unbeaten 90 and best support was from Joe Ellis with 32 and Graham Wilson 26, before they were all out for 170.

Pyrah ended with 4-32 while Nick Hardgrave took 4-39.

Some solid batting performances helped Sheffield United to a 68-run victory over city rivals Sheffield Collegiate in the derby at Abbeydale Park.

United openers Jon Trower, 79, and James Bentley, 30, put on 99 and then Alex Cairns made 42 as United reached 235-7. Matt Dixon took 5-92.

Tom Fletcher claimed the wicket of Nick Gaywood with just six runs on the board and they slipped to 49-3.

Rob Moyser made 45 and Michael Simpson 43, but with little other significant scorers, Collegiate were all out for 167 in the 39th over.

Aussie ace Cairns took 4-40 for United while Tom Fletcher chipped in with 3-43 to help United gain maximum points.

Rotherham Town had a good seven-wicket win over Harrogate at Clifton Lane after some fine knocks from Simon Guy and James Moorhouse.

Harrogate totalled 217-9 and Rotherham responded well with Guy unbeaten on 89 and Moorhouse 72 to help them to 218-3.
