Barnsley’s Green Party have opposed plans for public space protection orders in the town over concerns they could criminalise some of the most vulnerable residents.

Barnsley Council have recently launched a public consultation into PSPOs - a tough new law designed to equip councils with powers to tackle yob incidents, making it a criminal offence to behave in a way that ‘causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress’ to people. A spokesperson for the Green Party said the PSPOs are ‘vague and carry disproportionate fines’.
