Barnsley: '˜Greedy' Winnall targets more goals for Reds

The Reds striker bagged a brace on Tuesday night as the Reds got themselves right back in the play-off mix with a tough 2-1 win over Oldham.

And Winnall says he’s not done yet as he sets his sights on eclipsing his best-ever haul of 23 goals, which came in the 2013/14 campaign for Scunthorpe.

“It’s not bad,” smiled Winnall, who netted 13 times last season.

“But I’m greedy and I want more, so I’ll just keep striving for more.

“I don’t set targets. I just want to score as many goals as possible and never get happy with my return.

“I’ve reached the 20 mark and I’m disappointed that I haven’t got more, but that’s just who I am and that’s my attitude towards scoring goals.”

Victory over Oldham got Barnsley swiftly back to winning ways after Saturday’s defeat to Chesterfield.

And Winnall was delighted with the Johnstone Paint Trophy winners reaction, citing a strong team ethic as the key component.

“That’s the third time after a loss this season where we’ve gone on to win the next game,” he added.

“It does show a lot of character in the dressing room and it has put us back in with a shout.

“We’ve got five massive league games left and hopefully some more after that in the play-offs if we get there.”

Caretaker chief Paul Heckingbottom is delighted his 25-year-old has already reached the 20 goals mark this season.

Now March’s League One Manager of the Month has challenged Winnall to mbark on another impressive goal-scoring run of form that sees him find the net a few more times before the campaign comes to a close.

“One of Sam’s big qualities is his belief that he’ll score goals,” said the Barnsley boss.

“He likes to get the chances and he’s not bothered about missing them. He’ll keep going and that’s 20 goals now so he’s done great.”

Winnall has netted 19 times in the league and sits third in the top scorers list, three behind Swindon Town centre forward Nicky Ajose.

And Heckingbottom knows he’ll have his eye on finishing top of the pile come the end of the season.

“No doubt that will be his aim and we’ll be helping him try and do it because we know when he gets on a run it helps us,” he said.

“If we can get him on another good run between now and the end of the season it might get us where we want to be.”
