The 20-year-old hitman played a key role in helping the resurgent Reds win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and clinch victory in last season’s League One Play-off Final.

With fellow young gun Marcus Rashford the latest sensation at Old Trafford, Fletcher would consider continuing his Oakwell adventure.

“Barnsley is now a club that I hold very deep in my heart after gaining promotion,” said Fletcher, who scored in both Wembley finals for the club and finished the season with eight goals following an impressive loan spell.

“And it (coming here again) would be an option if United did send me out on loan again.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and loved every minute of it.

“Scoring at Wembley in big games like that to help get your team win a cup or get promoted, well it’s the sort of thing you dream about as a young boy.

“Very luckily for me, I have done it twice in a few weeks at the age of 20.

“Coming to Barnsley has been a great move for my career.

“There is a real bond in the changing room and I think you have seen that in the performances on the pitch since January.

“What we’ve achieved has been amazing and I know the lads are just buzzing to see what we can do in the Championship.”

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Fletcher on a season-long loan next season, but a Barnsley source revealed the club are hopeful they can sign the striker on loan again.

There is likely to plenty of competition for Fletcher’s signature, but the player is understood to enjoy the Reds’ attacking style of play and working under Paul Heckingbottom.

Caretaker boss Heckingbottom is expected to sit down with the club’s hierarchy this week to discuss taking the job on a permanent basis.

He put all contract talks on hold so his players were solely focused on shining in their two Wembley outings.
