A barbershop quartet were on song when they cleaned up with a clutch of prizes at a prestigious British hairdressing competition.

Staff from Sheffield city centre vintage barber shop Savills proved to be the cream of the crop and a cut above the rest at the British Barber Association contest in Birmingham, returning to South Yorkshire with an armful of prizes.

Neil Tomlinson, Joe Green, Giovanni Tornese and Jamie Dunning all walked away from the cut-throat competition involving some of the UK’s best barbers winning awards in a number of categories.

Giovanni was named overall winner in the student category and as a result will spend the next twelve months studying alongside some of the country’s top barbers continuing his training at Savills, which is based in Devonshire Street.

The Rotherham-based barber was in good company at the contest as his colleagues also walked off with prizes.

Sheffield-based Neil Tomlinson took third place in the BBA Student Barber of the Year Trends section with Joe Green, also of Sheffield, taking third spot in the Classic section.

Meanwhile, Jamie Dunning, who lives in Barnsley, took second place in the BBA Masters Competition and was winner in the creative section.

A spokesman for Savills said: “We are massively proud of the guys for achieving their clutch of awards in these prestigious categories.

“We all had an awesome couple of days down at the Barber UK event.”

The award-winning barbershop is home to an immaculate collection of vintage barber’s equipment including a Campbell hot lather machine from the 1940s, a chrome National cash register and a Theo A Kosch barber’s chair that was made in Chicago in the early 1900s.

The shop prides itself on continuing the age-old craft of barbering in vintage surroundings, using techniques that have been handed down through generations,

The salon was named best barber shop for three years running by Exposed magazine and has also won two best salon awards from The Star, in 2012 and 2013.

Staff have also worked with Sheffield Theatres, styling the casts of various plays including stars Dominic West and John Simm.
