Hope Akpan was sent off against Sheffield Wednesday for placing his hands on referee Scott Duncan

The Rovers midfielder was incensed by the disallowing of a late goal and confronted the match official, who immediately sent the player off. On twitter yesterday, Akpan denied pushing Duncan but has now been served with a ban which will see him miss his team's glamour FA Cup tie with Manchester United at Ewood Park this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday won the match 2-1 thanks to a brace from Vincent Sasso.

Akpan has been given a three-match ban while fellow midfielder Elliott Bennett has been given a two-match ban for using offensive language after the final whistle and he too will miss the Manchester United game.
