Scunthorpe-based Ongo Homes will build 50 affordable dwellings in Balby, after the plan was given the green light on Tuesday.

There was just one vote against the development which will be built at Ivor Grove.

Ongo Homes representative Martin Phillips addressed the committee. He said the development would help relieve the 'huge identified need for affordable housing in Doncaster'.

Mr Phillips said the cost of each residence would be in line with the local housing allowance in the town.

When asked if that would be a long-term arrangement, Mr Phillips said the company was committed to providing affordable housing in Doncaster.

The committee approved the plan despite nearby residents opposing the development. There were 22 letters against the proposal, and a petition with 196 signatures.

Nearby resident Sue Broughton feared a valuable piece of green space would be lost.

"This is nature on our doorstep," she said.

The space where the development will go is used by dog walkers and local children, she said.

Noise and disturbance to neighbours and additional traffic generated by the development have also been raised as concerns.

The plan has been amended since the original submission to allow for two claimed rights of way at the site.

Originally, 60 dwellings were planned, with 12 of them single-storey. The rest will be two-storey.

Semi-detached and smaller terraced rows are part of the plan.

The plan includes 59 car parking spaces.
