Backing England in the World Cup

A4e, the Sheffield-based training and business services company, is sponsoring England's Homeless World Cup team, which includes 19-year-old Kyle Hawthorne of Doncaster.

The company, which is a market leader in supporting disadvantaged members of society into training and employment, stumped up the vital cash without which the team would not be able to take part in the tournament, which is taking place in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

Thanks to the training programme, Doncaster player Kyle is now planning to go on to Leeds Metropolitan University in September to study sports.

He said: "I've really enjoyed the challenge so far. I think we've all achieved a lot and we have some great players on the squad, great coaches and support too.

"I'm excited to be going out to Copenhagen. I've definitely picked up a lot things from the coaches – for one, don't train to be poor or you'll end up being poor! It's bettered my fitness and helped me make friends."

Prior to leaving, the team took part in three days intensive training at Manchester United's Carrington Training Ground, where they met United goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Manchester United coach Louis Garvey is coaching England's Homeless World Cup team and has nothing but praise for his team and their sponsor.

"A4e is the biggest difference that has been as they are one of the biggest sponsors we have had now or in the past," said Louis.

"We literally had couple of hundred pounds left and it looked like we wouldn't be going.

"We promised them that we would treat them like professionals and when we were able to announce that they had a sponsor, it was great. They could have a kit and they look professional. You can equate that with Manchester United and that's what they feel like."

A4e development consultant Liz Flynn, who flew out with the team on Friday, said: "Ours is a long term commitment to the England Home-less World Cup team. We feel passionate about improving people's lives and helping those who are excluded."

Executive chairman Mark Lovell added: "We're delighted to be sponsoring the England team in this year's tournament.

"Our ethos is to 'Improve People's Lives' in all that we do, which fits well with the Homeless World Cup and all that it stands for.

"Participation leads to improvement in the lives of those involved, with a significant number addressing employment, housing and self-esteem issues and we are proud to be sponsoring such a worthwhile event."
