Aviva Women's Tour contenders target pivotal Derbyshire stage today
The Aviva Women's Tour Stage 2 results have set the scene for an incredibly exciting day in Derbyshire today as the county hosts Stage 3 of the international cycle road race.
Amy Pieters took the second stage as Wiggle HIGH5 rider Marianne Vos claimed the overall leader’s yellow jersey as she sprinted to victory in Stratford at the end of a 140-kilometre stage through Warwickshire.
Pieters headed reigning Aviva Women’s Tour champion Lisa Brennauer and Vos into a close finish with Orica AIS rider Gracie Elvin fourth and overnight leader Christine Majerus fifth.
In the overall standings, Marianne Vos has a three-second lead over Majerus, with Pieters a further four seconds back.
Despite often inclement weather conditions the stage was another fast paced affair, with lots of attacking riding, no rider more so than Ale Cipollini’s Emilia Fahlin, who was twice away in moves off the front of the race, the second time alone.
Marianne Vos also now holds the Chain Reaction Cycles Points classification.
Lizzie Armitstead finished safely in the front group in 18th to remain the highest placed British rider overall in the Adnams Best British Rider jersey.
The Strava Queen of the Mountains jersey is now held by UnitedHealthcare’s Katie Hall, two points ahead of Ilona Hoeksma.
Her compatriot Floortje Mackaij retained the Best Young Rider jersey.
