The event, held at Swinton Masonic Hall next March, includes a programme of talks and practical sessions to help people learn the basic techniques and develop their interest.

A spokesman for the society said: “The British Astronomical Association has designed the programme and we will have experienced people on hand to answer people’s questions.

“The day will cover what equipment, maps and books will best help you to get started. There will also be a lunar observing workshop, a planet observing workshop, and a session called radio astronomy and imaging for beginners.”

Places for the day, held on Saturday March 11, are limited so early booking is advised. Retailers including BAA Sales, W&W Astro and The Far-Sighted Binocular Company will also be attending on the day.

The cost for the meeting, at the hall on Station Street in Swinton, is £8 for BAA members and children under 16, or £10 for non-members. The price will include refreshments and a buffet lunch.
