Artist Harrison looks at his home city through fresh eyes

A first solo exhibition by Sheffield-born artist Harrison Moore draws on themes that include contemporary uses of steel, Sheffield’s topography, the city’s representation in the media and local voices.

The exhibition of drawings and other objects seeks to imagine Sheffield through fresh artistic perspectives. Harrison, who now lives in London, did research around the city for six weeks, talking to Sheffielders and filming them with his video camera.

Harrison’s work also looks at how we all view and value contemporary art and how class affects this.

He said: “After living elsewhere for five years I’m now responding to Sheffield with new eyes. Is Sheffield still a relic to a steel industry no longer present?

“It is my feeling that Sheffield is in the midst of exploring its identity; embracing its industrial heritage in creative ways but also maturing beyond it and becoming more conscious of itself as a forward-looking place of openness and diversity.

“Questions concerning what has happened, what is happening now and what will happen next are important and have provided me with a rich terrain to work in.

“ I’m trying to understand what Sheffield feels like to live in today and what it feels like to be a Sheffielder.

“If anything I’ve done prompts others to look at Sheffield with new eyes, if only for a moment, then I’ll be happy with the work.

“I’m very excited to be putting on my first solo show in my hometown.”

The show will open on Monday, September 5, from 6pm to 9pm, and will continue from September 6 to 8 from 10am to 5pm.
