A SOUTH Yorkshire charity which protects badgers is appealing for donations to allow it to continue its work.
South Yorkshire Badger Group was formed in 1985 and is holding an art auction at The Venue, Stocksbridge, this Saturday to boost its coffers.
Items to be auctioned off include paintings, drawings, photographs, ceramics and wood carvings.
The charity said South Yorkshire would not be affected by Government plans to cull badgers as there is no bovine TB in the county. But it still needs money to protect badgers from persecution.
A spokesman for the group said they use steel mesh to protect badger setts which costs £100 a sheet.
The spokesman added: “Our funds have been drastically depleted by the amount of protections we carried out last year in Sheffield and Doncaster, so one of the ways we hope to raise enough money to carry on is by holding the art auction.”
The event will be opened by Angela Smith, Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge.
