But a jury unanimously convicted Hussain on the abduction count after the woman, who has been known in the media as ‘Jessica’, gave evidence about that incident and other occasions where her abuser would take her from her home.

Details of an incident in 2000 involving a now-deceased police officer called Hassan Ali and former Rotherham Council deputy leader Jahangir Akhtar were described to the jury by Jessica, who is now 30 years old.

She said the two men had been involved in an agreement for her to be handed over at a petrol station by Arshid Hussain in exchange for him not being prosecuted for taking her after she went missing from home with him. Hussain was found guilty of five charges involving Jessica, including one of abduction relating to repeat offending of the same kind between November 1999 and June 2000.

Records put before the trial showed that on the day of the alleged handover, a police protection order had been put on Jessica to protect her from the ‘risk of significant harm’.

Agreed facts read to the jury said a 24-year-old named ‘Ash’ – Hussain’s nickname – was believed to be the father of the baby.

Records from a Family Crisis Response Team worker on the same day of the alleged handover – March 1, 2000 – said ‘They had ‘got’ her after a community policeman had done a deal and arranged to meet at a neutral venue – petrol station?’

The court was told PC Ali had denied the incident had ever happened when interviewed.

PC Ali was involved in a fatal collision with a car on Staniforth Road, Darnall in Sheffield on January 28 last year, the same day he had been informed he was being placed on restricted duties in relation to complaints that had been made against him.

He died on February 6. An inquest is yet to take place into his death.
