Arriva’s extortionate bus fares

Being a holder of a concessionary bus pass for the past few years I don’t always appreciate just how precious it is.

When I hear people complaining of extortionate fares they have to pay I probably take it all with a pinch of salt.

That was until last week when I was on holiday in Whitby.

I boarded a bus in Whitby bus station which was bound for Scarborough via Robin Hoods Bay.

I thought I would spend a few hours in Robin Hoods Bay and as I did not have my pass with me I asked the driver how much the fare was.

He asked if I wanted a return fare, which I replied yes please, and then he said: “That will be £7 please.”

I was very surprised at this and the driver said: “ Sorry mate, I only drive the bus.”

The journey took less than 20 minutes and the bus stopped to pick up several passengers on the way.

The return journey took 16 minutes.

The bus company was Arriva but I’m not sure if the fare would be different with any other company.

In future when I hear people complain about fares in Sheffield, I will listen with a little more compassion.
