Mr Trevelyan, who works at Sheffield Hallam University, was cut and bruised in the attack in the underpass, which runs under the railway near Dunnelm Mill.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Following the well publicised attack on a cyclist in Heeley we have identified one of those involved and he was arrested yesterday.

“Hopefully more arrests will follow. Thanks to everyone who came forward to assist.

“We will not tolerate this type of behaviour and will do everything we can to prosecute those involved.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
