A MAN has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing a fire at a South Yorkshire house which almost killed a nine-year-old boy and his mum.

The 41-year-old man from Sheffield was arrested after the property, on Ash Grove in Kiveton Park, went up in flames in the early hours of last Thursday.

The 33-year-old mum, named locally as Jane Chapman, was trapped with her son Matthew in an upstairs bedroom.

A fire service operator who took the mother’s 999 call gave her vital lifesaving advice.

Crews who carried the pair to safety said the fumes were so thick the blaze would have been fatal in just a few more minutes.

A police investigation into the suspected arson attack is still ongoing.
