Armed gang hunted after guard robbed

A GANG of armed robbers who attacked a security guard outside a Doncaster superstore are today being hunted after getting away with thousands of pounds.

The 45-year-old man escaped with minor injuries when he was set upon by two men armed with a knife and a metal bar.

Although he did not need hospital treatment the guard was left shocked by the incident outside the Tesco Extra at Woodfield Plantation, Balby.

Two men wearing balaclavas pounced on him as he made an early morning delivery to the premises. A third man waited in a nearby getaway car.

The duo stole a large quantity of cash from the guard and jumped into the car, a silver convertible Audi A4, which was later found abandoned on Whisperwood Drive in Woodfield Plantation.

The three raiders were then seen running towards Tickhill Road, Balby, where they are believed to have got into a dark saloon car driven by a fourth man.

Police have taken the Audi away for a detailed forensic examination. The men are white and wore dark clothes and balaclavas.

They were all of a medium build and are thought to be in their 20s.

Det Sgt Keith Evans, of South Yorkshire Police’s robbery squad, said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who saw the movements of this second car on Tickhill Road or saw the robbers running towards it.

“We believe the robbers were armed with a knife and some sort of bar but there is no suggestion they were carrying firearms.”

Anyone who has any information about the robbery, which happened between 6.15am and 6.40am on Thursday October 11 should call Det Con Nick Snaith on 0114 2963308 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
