Sheffield’s Moor Market had a VIP shopper when the Archbishop of York visited - and took home some beer.

Dr John Sentamu called in at the £18 million facility on Saturday as part of a four-day Crossroads mission across the diocese with 21 bishops.

He spoke to shoppers, purchased olives and a dress for his grandaughter as well as trying Portuguese tarts and being presented with beers by trader Sean Clarke from Beer Central. The market also hosted a service.

Father Grant Naylor, of St Matthew’s Church, Carver Street, said: “Archbishop Sentamu is a real champion for northern communities and it’s my prayer this visit will bring many blessings on the market and city.”

A balloon release at Sheffield Cathedral marked the start of the mission.
