Churchgoers gathered in Sheffield, and almost 200 people packed into Rotherham Minster, to see the Archbishop of York.
Dr John Sentamu led a Eucharist service at the minster as part of his visit to the Diocese of Sheffield yesterday.
Canon David Bliss, Vicar of Rotherham, said around 175 people had taken part.
“It’s the first time this archbishop has visited the minster and the Archbishop of York hasn’t visited for many years so it was a very special occasion,” he said. “It went very well, it was a lovely service.”
The archbishop also visited the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham for a tour of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, before moving on to Sheffield where he addressed a gathering at St Thomas’ Church in Crookes on the topic of encouraging youth evangelism.
He was accompanied by Steven Croft, Bishop of Sheffield, and Peter Burrows, Bishop of Doncaster.
