£10,000 donation to help wife of Owls fitness coach battle cancer

Hayley Kalinins, aged 35, who is married to Owls fitness coach Andy Kalinins, has been battling breast cancer, which has spread to her liver and lungs, since 2011.

Earlier this year she launched an online fundraising appeal to pay for specialist treatment in the US in a desperate bid to extend her life.

In just one week family, friends, players past and present and football fans from across Sheffield raised more than £50,000 for the treatment.

But since then Hayley has found another clinic in Germany which offers a different treatment, with proven results, which she hopes could eventually cure her, but which will cost £250,000.

Just minutes after Sheffield Wednesday chairman Carlos Carvalhal retweeted Hayley’s appeal for help in raising the extra cash, his former boss Abdullah Al Naboodah spotted the plea made a £10,000 donation.

The kind-hearted donor is the president of the Al Ahli Football Company in Dubai, where Carvalhal was the technical director for two years before moving to Sheffield.

British medics have run out of treatment options but Hayley is now pinning her homes on treatment in a clinic in southern Germany, following positive results for other cancer sufferers.

She said other patients have had ‘incredible and unbelievable’ responses from the treatment.

Hayley, who is started a new form of chemotherapy through the German clinic this week, said: “I have undergone over 70 rounds of chemotherapy and my treatment options have come to an end here in the UK.

“It is an enormous amount of money but the Hallwang Clinic offer a more scientific medical treatment plan. These treatments are not available here in the UK or on the NHS. There are no further options left for me here.

“These latest treatments could possibly lead to ‘remission’ – a word that I have never heard mentioned in secondary breast cancer in the nearly five years since diagnosis.

“They have patients at the clinic with secondary breast cancer who have had incredible and unbelievable responses from immune therapy.

“Please, please, please can everyone continue to support, fundraise and donate so I can proceed with this treatment.

“I realise that I am again asking for help but the only alternative is to give up. My four children need their mum. My husband needs his wife.”
