Appeal to save heritage

AN EMERGENCY £2.5 million appeal has been launched today to save Wentworth Castle's unique Victorian conservatory.

The Grade Two listed cast-iron conservatory in the grounds of Wentworth Castle at Stainborough near Barnsley is now in danger of total collapse.

Described as "Yorkshire's cathedral to plants", the 1880 building is close to collapse.

In 2003 the conservatory reached the national final of the BBC series Restoration. It polled 130,000 votes but did not win.

Two years ago Wentworth Castle Trust decided to support the structure with a scaffold.

The trust has devised a 2.5 million rescue package and is trying to secure funding for the restoration of the conservatory and walled kitchen garden.

Heritage director Richard Evans said: "Without any further help this ornate structure will decay further and then ultimately collapse.

"People can help by sponsoring a pane of glass or by making a donation. All supporters will have their contributions acknowledged on a commemorative panel to be placed inside the conservatory, once it is restored.

This weekend, to celebrate Heritage Open Days, visitors can enter the gardens free but will be asked to make a donation.
