Appeal to remember Sheffield Girls Brigade stalwart

Barbara Swift was a stalwart at Shiregreen United Reformed Church, located on Valentine Crescent, and had held the position of church secretary for 60 years as well as that of brigade leader.

Now friends are appealing for people across the city who remember the dedicated volunteer from their childhoods to attend her funeral, which will take place at the church from 1pm next Wednesday June 22.

“Generations of girls will remember Miss Swift as their caring and faithful Girls Brigade leader for Barbara Swift many years”, said Ian Lucraft, from the church.

“She arrived in Shiregreen as a young girl with her parents.

“In 1946, aged 20 she was made the church secretary, a post that she held for over 60 years.

“All her life she cared for the members and friends of the church, and she was sometimes referred to as ‘the soul’ of the church.

“She certainly set its tone, of outreach and sensitivity.

“Her patience and hard work with the Girls Brigade meant that there are many women across the city who remember her with an abiding love and respect.

“Though she was sometimes a bit formal, she also loved a good laugh; and certainly tolerated the girls when they were mucking around.”

“Her friends want to reach out across the city to the people who remember her and invite them to come to her funeral.”
