The white 'Lionhead' bunnies were discovered dumped on a patch of woodland beside Woodhead Road, Grenoside, on Tuesday.

The RSPCA said both had been neglected and were found with faeces clumped around their fur, while one had severely overgrown teeth which required urgent filing.

The charity has appealed for information as it tries to track down and bring to justice the man responsible for the shocking act of cruelty.

It said a man was seen getting out of a silver Vauxhall Astra on Tuesday with a blue recycling box, with which he returned to the vehicle seconds later.

Thinking he was acting strangely, a witness went over to see what he had been doing, and found the rabbits.

RSPCA deputy chief inspector Jennie Ronksley said luckily the site was a popular litter dumping spot so a member of the public was keeping an eye out for culprits.

"It could have been a very different story for them had the witness not seen something that pricked their attention and gone to investigate," she added.

“The man who dumped them showed a complete disregard for the welfare of these rabbits and I’m appealing for anyone who knows who he is to get in touch.

“The rabbits had clearly been neglected for some considerable time, and if that isn’t bad enough, they were then abandoned, loose, next to a 60mph road.”

The rabbits are now being cared for at a vets, where they will both be neutered before being moved to an RSPCA centre for rehousing.

The RSPCA says the bunnies will be rehoused once they have fully recovered from their dreadful ordeal

Anyone with information is asked to call the RSPCA inspector appeal line on 0300 123 8018 and ask to leave a message for DCI Ronksley.
