Sheffield Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament is holding events to commemorate the anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War Two.

Tomorrow is Hiroshima Day, which will be marked with a presence outside the Town Hall, from 10am.

Lord Mayor, Coun Vickie Priestley, will attend at 11am to sign the international Mayors for Peace declaration and a message will be read from the current Mayor of Hiroshima, Matsui Kazumi.

On Sunday, August 11, the CND group is holding a Nagasaki Day peace picnic at Meersbrook Park Community Walled Garden between 2pm and 5pm.

Bruce Kent, vice president of the national CND group, is attending and there will be music from folk singer Roy Bailey, plus poetry reading and paper crane-making.

People are encouraged to bring a picnic and something to share.

Jon Wallis, of Sheffield CND, said: “Come and Join Sheffield CND in commemorating the bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, which led to the death of over 220,000 people.

“Both events are in remembrance of the victims of the atom bombs.”
