Animal lover thanked for helping to save ponies abandoned in South Yorkshire

A woman who helped rescue two abandoned, ill treated ponies has been reunited with them.

Rachel Edgerton, aged 37, who has had horses all her life, including some who were rescued, stepped in to help when Nellie and Napoleon were found wandering on a road in Wath-upon-Dearne late at night.

She said they were emaciated and had lice and that Nellie had colic and was in a ‘bad state’.

Rachel, who already had four of her own horse, said she was unable to take the in but she googled horse rescue organisations and found World Horse Welfare, which had a re-homing centre in Blackpool and agreed to take the ponies in.

Paying for the cost of transporting the ponies herself, Rachel accompanied them to Penny Farm in Blackpool and was invited back to see them by the charity to say thank you for her efforts.

World Horse Welfare Field Officer, Chris Shaw, said: “The ponies were clearly in a vulnerable situation, suffering from severe diarrhoea with Nellie showing signs of colic and both desperately in need of treatment for their worms and lice infestations, as well as appropriate feeding to help bring them back to health.

“Rachel’s actions were not only quick thinking and compassionate, but she absolutely went above and beyond to keep the ponies safe and give them the best possible chance of recovery. Her generosity and dedication are exceptional and I know I speak for everyone at World Horse Welfare when I say we are immensely grateful for her support.”

Rachel said: “They look brilliant, absolutely brilliant, I can’t believe the transformation. They were in such a terrible condition, emaciated and infested with worms and lice and now they look amazing.

“I’m over the moon to have this opportunity to see the ponies again and so impressed with the amazing results the team at Penny Farm have achieved. I’d urge anyone thinking about donating to World Horse Welfare to go ahead and do it because without them Nellie, Napoleon and thousands of other horses wouldn’t have had this chance at a new lease of life and there are still many more who need their help.”

Nellie and Napoleon have both now been re-homes as companions.
