A ‘SCAMNESTY’ has been organised by Derbyshire County Council for residents fed up with receiving mail about scam get-rich quick schemes, lotteries and prize draws.
The council’s trading standards department is asking people to drop off all the letters, leaflets and fliers they are suspicious about.
Bins will be placed in libraries in Chesterfield, Alfreton, Buxton, Glossop, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Dronfield and Swadlincote. All personal details should be removed before handing in the mail.
Councillor Carol Hart, cabinet member for communities, said: “It is important for us to be able to identify any potential new scams and the information handed in will give us an ideal opportunity to investigate.
“Scammers are growing increasingly sophisticated and it can be easy to be taken in by an offer that seems too good to be true.
“Our advice is to never give out personal information or bank details and never send any money to these people.”
