Khan will face highly-rated Mexican Canelo on May 7 in Las Vegas on the huge traditional Cinco De Mayo show in Sin City.

The making of the bout has not only robbed the British boxing scene of its most highly-anticipated unmade super fight but also snatched away a payday of at least £2million for Sheffield fighter Brook.

Very public and fiery negotiations had been taking place between the camps of Brook and Khan to book a blockbuster fight at Wembley Stadium on June 4.

Khan has long felt he deserves the greater split of the fight purse due to being a bigger name in the sport, something on which Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn backed down and offered the Olympic silver medalist a 60:40 cut.

The bout has never really looked close to being made. And with the size of the proposed contest commanding a stadium show, it is more than likely that another year will pass before talks resume.

Brook defends his IBF welterweight crown against mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier of Canada at Sheffield Arena on March 26. Beyond what should be a rather routine defence, Brook's future is unclear.

Khan's determination to fight big names has long seen him mocked as bouts with the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao having failed to materialise.

But his perseverance has ultimately paid off after landing the clash with Canelo, a fighter widely seen as one to take the mantle from Mayweather and Pacquiao who are both heading into retirement.

To meet Canelo, Khan will jump up two weight classes away from Brook, who fights at welterweight. Khan has never fought above welterweight before.

The making of the Canelo-Khan fight has also hit hopes for another super bout this years. Fans are clamouring for Canelo to face the devastatingly powerful unbeaten IBF and WBA champion Gennady Golovkin.
