All’s good for Haxey Hood winner

Staff at The Loco pub were all smiles after the watering hole steamed to a stunning surprise victory in this year’s Haxey Hood.

Holly Vaughan and Jamie Benham of the Church Street pub are pictured with the prized leather cylinder which found its way across the doorstep in one of the quickest contests on record, taking just 95 minutes for victory.

The annual contest in the North Lincolnshire village sees regulars from four pubs - The Loco, The Duke William and The King’s Arms in Haxey and The Carpenter’s Arms in Westwoodside - scrap it out in the muddy fields between the two villages in a game whose roots stretch back 700 years.

It was the first victory for The Loco since 2005 and denied the King’s Arms a hat-trick of victories in the battle which always takes place on January 6.

The tube - which represents a riding hood lost by a lady of the manor in the 1300s and which was the basis of the game - will now hang proudly in place above the bar until New Year’s Eve.
