Alarms alert family to fire

A FAMILY were alerted to a blaze raging in front of their South Yorkshire home - by smoke detectors fitted just hours earlier by firefighters.

As flames licked against their house in Goldthorpe at 12.20am today, the two newly-fitted smoke alarms shrieked into life and alerted the occupants.

Officers led them to safety and said there had been no immediate danger to their lives. Police are treating the incident as suspicious.

The fire started when mattresses and other rubbish was torched in the front garden. The flames then spread to the front of the house, where windows and guttering was damaged.
