A DEBATE on whether Sheffield City Airport should reopen is to take place tomorrow.

The issue will be discussed at a full meeting of Sheffield Council after a petition was collected with 5,289 signatures.

The petition also calls on the authority to ‘urgently ensure’ that any redevelopment of the site of the former airport is put on hold until an independent public inquiry is held to look into the potential for reopening.

Signatures on the petition have been collected by the Federation of Small Businesses, which is campaigning to have the airport reopened.

Sheffield Business Park, which owns the site, has planning permission to dig up the runway and replace it with industrial buildings.

But an unidentified buyer has come forward and offered to purchase the airport, which closed in 2008, with a view to reopening it.
