Eileen Harrington, founder of DonMentia and a governor at Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, ensured her garden was shipshape and she baked up a treat, to ensure those with dementia and their carers could sit back and enjoy the summer.

The DonMentia event saw Eileen, a keen gardener, heading into her kitchen to bake the mouth-watering treats, supported by friends, so that those with dementia could have an afternoon out.

Eileen said everyone who attended had a great time.

She added: “It was a lovely afternoon, the weather was fine and people with dementia and their carers could sit back, relax and enjoy the summer.”

Wayne Goddard, Doncaster’s dementia commissioning lead for the Clinical Commissioning Group and Doncaster Council, praised Eileen for her dedication.

He added: “Eileen always puts on a great afternoon tea in her fantastic garden.

“She worked so hard to make this event a success and I want to thank her on behalf of all the partners and associates who are working together to make Doncaster a better place for those living with dementia and their families.”

This is not the first time Eileen has gone the extra mile to help others.

Last year she organised a limousine ride for Heather and Dennis Garriock to help celebrate their 80th birthdays.

They went on a return trip from their home at Armthorpe to Arksey’s Village Teapot for afternoon tea and celebrated with friends and carers. The couple had also recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Heather has dementia and attends the Donmentia sessions.
