FINAL tributes are to be paid to South Yorkshire’s first Territorial Army soldier killed in Afghanistan when his funeral takes place next week.

The service for Private Matthew Thornton, aged 28, of Fourth Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, who was killed two days before Remembrance Day, will be held on Tuesday at Darton All Saints Parish Church, starting at 11am.

Dozens of mourners including relatives, friends and fellow TA volunteers are expected to gather.

Numerous roads in the area will be closed before the service, including Station Road and Church Street, from Sackup Lane to Barnsley Road, and the Barnsley Road/Huddersfield Road junction.
