SOUTH Yorkshire actress Sheridan Smith was in tears after she was mugged for her mobile phone by three hooded thugs as she waited for a bus in London.

The Gavin and Stacey star, originally from Doncaster, was standing at a bus stop near busy Piccadilly Circus after a performance of Flare Path at the Theatre Royal Haymarket when she was targeted.

Sheridan, who in Gavin and Stacey played Ruth, the sister of James Corden’s character Smithy, was ringing a pal on her iPhone when the mugger struck.

An eyewitness said: “I noticed three lads in their 20s standing on some steps a little back from the main group of people at the bus stop. One wore a grey tracksuit and two others had black hoodies pulled round their faces.

“I was a bit anxious as they seemed to be looking at people.

“The bloke in the tracksuit ran through a number of people and grabbed a phone from a woman waiting at the bus stop. It was over in a second - she never had time to react. She walked past me towards where the man had run off and I could see it was Sheridan Smith. She was obviously shocked and pale.”

The witness said Sheridan followed her attacker but lost him.

“I could see she was crying. Some people at the bus stop tried to console her. A man put his arm around her. She was terribly upset.”

Sheridan made her name in a string of TV sitcoms including Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.
