A giant cat and a celebrity guest added the X factor to the opening of a Sheffield charity shop.

Actress Susan Cookson – Dr Maggie Coldwell in Casualty – took time out to open The Sheffield Cats Shelter’s new outlet at 285 Ecclesall Road.

Susan, who lives in Sheffield and has two cats adopted from the shelter, said she was ‘delighted to help’.

Shirley Buckingham, manager of the shelter in Broomhall, said: “I would like to thank all staff and volunteers for the hard work involved in opening the shop – particularly Dawn Taylor, who has been appointed shop manager.”

The store is now appealing for donations of quality items to sell and to raise money.

The shelter hopes to raise extra cash by holding an auction from 8pm this Friday at the Showroom Cinema.

Entry is £2 on the night and items going under the hammer include sporting memorabilia and tickets, jewellery and Christmas gifts.
