THE brother-in-law of a man accused of raping a woman on South Yorkshire’s Trans-Pennine Trail told a court his relative was delivering wood to his house at the time of the alleged attack.
Shaun Liceon told jurors at Sheffield Crown Court he spent over an hour with 38-year-old David Thompson on June 24 last year and that Thompson was bringing the timber to his house as he was replacing his kitchen.
“He was fetching old wood for me because I have a wood burner,” Mr Liceon added.
Mr Liceon said he was in Thompson’s company from 11.50am to 1.25pm, and saw him later at a family party.
The prosecution say Thompson attacked a 50-year-old woman from behind as she walked her dog near Elsecar Reservoir on June 24, sexually assaulting and raping her.
Thompson, of Ash Grove, Rawmarsh, Rotherham, denies rape and assault by penetration. The trial continues.
