Accused’s court overdose

A SEX change lorry driver was rushed to hospital yesterday after apparently taking an overdose at Sheffield Crown Court.

Craig Bowman, now called Emma, had been warned she was facing prison by Judge Peter Kelson who had adjourned the case from the morning to read reports. He bailed Bowman, 42, to the precincts of the court building.

But in the afternoon defence counsel Paul O’Shea said that reception staff reported Bowman had taken an overdose in the building and had been taken to hospital.

Her condition is unknown but she will be sentenced at a later date.

Bowman turned to a loan shark after being left with mounting debts of £11,000. To clear the debt she allowed two male friends to develop a sophisticated cannabis-growing factory at her home.

Police found 50 plants worth about £18,000 on the open market.

Bowman admitted allowing her premises in Goldthorpe, Barnsley, to be used to produce the Class B drug.

Mr O’Shea said Bowman was an “almost unique defendant” who is nine months away from completing full gender realignment.
