'˜A matter of time' before death on Sheffield danger road

People living near a Sheffield road where a five-car collision took place this week have warned it is only a matter of time before someone is killed unless action is taken.

Almost 1,000 people have now signed a petition calling for road safety improvements on Dyke Vale Road in Hackenthorpe following a series of collisions in which vehicles have smashed into parked cars.

The issue is set to be debated today by Sheffield councillors.

The latest crash on Monday morning involved five vehicles. Police were chasing a stolen Audi that smashed into two parked cars and a van before it was hit by the pursuing police vehicle.

It comes less than a month after thousands of pounds of damage was caused to vehicles on the same street by a hit-and-run driver.

Sarah Winn, who started the petition, said action needs to be taken.

“One of these days, someone is going to end up dead,” she said.

“Something needs to be done – especially with the road being so close to a park.”

Residents say there are a number of reasons for ongoing problems on the road – including a lack of parking spaces which means there are only narrow spaces for drivers to pass.

Campaigners say Sheffield Council should prioritise introducing new safety measures on the street, including either speed bumps, CCTV cameras or widening the road.

Among those who have commented on the online petition is Angela Pickford, who lives on the street and said a car has hit her house in the past.

She said: “I have lived on this road for the past 20 years and see daily the excessive speeds that a very large percentage of drivers do.

“We have suffered damage repeatedly – wing mirrors ripped off, scratches down the sides of our vehicles, bumpers damaged.

“I’ve even had a car plough into the front of my house. Soon we the residents won’t be able to get car insurance through no fault of ours.”

Theresa Gilberthorpe said: “I am signing this to get something done about this ridiculous situation, to support those people who live there.

“Someone will be killed.”

Amy Marsden from Beighton added: “I think the road is dangerous and something needs to be done before people are killed.”

A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop and theft in relation to Monday’s crash.

Police said investigations are continuing.
