This pair of love birds are having the best Valentine’s Day ever - after winning their dream £15,000 wedding.
Alec Smith and Diane Eyre were ecstatic to hear they had notched up the most votes in The Star’s Win a Wedding competition.
Readers were compelled to vote for the couple after Alec, 47, told of how he first fell for Diane - when she served him a cheese and ham sandwich every day at a shop on the same street as his former workplace.
Alec, a project manager, and Diane, 36, a sales assistant, encouraged as many friends and family as possible to vote for them. Diane even rallied support from her customers at the Jet garage in Tickhill.
After hearing of their win, Diane said: “It’s amazing - I’m trembling, my heart is beating ten to the dozen. I just can’t wait to see Alec’s face on the day. He is just going to be blown away.”
Alec added: “I’m over the moon. People would often ask when and how we would get married - then when Diane saw the competition she said, ‘That’s my wedding. That’s perfect for us.’”
On October 3, Alec and Diane, of Castle Avenue, Rossington, will tie the knot in Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens. After a photo shoot worth £1,249 with city photographer Lloyd Siddall, they will be whisked away to Whirlowbrook Hall for a three-course wedding breakfast and afternoon tea for 40 guests. The venue will also host an evening buffet for 80 complete with DJ.
The prize also includes a bespoke wedding gown to the value of £900 by designer Kelly Marie Redhead - a finalist in the Best Student Designer of the Year category in the Bridal Buyer Awards.
