90 police officers in child grooming probe

The Independent Police Complaints Commission revealed today nine investigations have been completed – with the watchdog concluding there were no cases to answer.

Another 53 are ongoing.

The probe into the conduct of officers over the child abuse scandal came after an independent report by Professor Alexis Jay found that 1,400 children were abused by men of largely Pakistani heritage between 1997 and 2013 while authorities turned a blind eye.

It covers allegations including failure to act and corruption. 
A total of 211 individual allegations by 40 complainants are being looked at, with another 120 allegations relating to officers yet to be identified.

Rachel Cerfontyne, of the IPCC, said: “It is entirely understandable all those affected, as well as the wider public, want answers quickly.

“However, our priority has to be to ensure all of the investigations are carried out rigorously and thoroughly.” 

David Greenwood, a solicitor who represents 70 victims, said: “The important thing for the country is that the IPCC do a thorough job.”
