80,000 flock to Rotherham Show

FUN-seekers turned out in force to make the 28th Rotherham Show one of the most successful yet.

After one of the most dismal summers on record, tens of thousands of people decided to make the most of the late sunshine.

Organisers are still counting the figures but believe the Indian summer and the bumper programme may have brought with it a record-breaking attendance on Sunday.

The show is already billed as one of the biggest free events in the north of England. A Rotherham Council spokesman said: "The fantastic weather helped, but the attractions were brilliant. The place was just heaving with people."

The massive programme of events seemed to please most people, with the Diversity Festival one of the most popular with its mix of ethnic sights and sounds.

There was the usual vintage and classic car show, horticultural events, craft stalls, fairground attractions and music to suit all tastes.

The car show alone attracted more than 140 entries - and was preceded by a procession through the town centre to the Clifton Park showground, led by the Mayor's official car, ET 1.

Rotherham Council also took the opportunity to lay on a special display about the massive regeneration which is going on in the town centre.

Among the marquees this year was one run by the Rotherham Federation of Tenants and Residents (RotherFed) who were working with a professional film maker on a DVD called Tenants' Voices.

Many of the visitors also took the opportunity to sample Clifton Park's more permanent attractions such as the children's playground, museum and sports facilities.
