A multi-million pound funding deal has been approved to develop the UK’s first centre of excellence for food engineering in Sheffield.

Sheffield Hallam University will receive the funds following a successful bid to the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

The centre will be operational by 2017 and the university is set to become a leading education provider for the food and drink industry. The centre will include state-of-the-art facilities, research and development services to address efficiency in food production and manufacturing, and aim to combat a growing skills shortage in the industry.

Dr Martin Howarth, Hallam’s head of department for engineering and maths, said: “This project builds on our existing strong track record of providing excellent research and knowledge.”
