Community groups across South Yorkshire which have won grants worth £50,000 are revealed today.

From football clubs to recycling initiatives, the grassroots projects rewarded were given the Sport Relief Community Cash boosts for making a difference in the heart of communities.

The funding was decided after hundreds of people took to the streets of Sheffield in March to run, walk or cycle as part of the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief flagship games, which boosted charity Comic Relief.

Groups which were given cash boosts include the S20 Food Bank, Sharrow Festival and Southey Development Forum.

Victoria Southwell, Comic Relief UK Grants Manager, said: “The successful projects announced today in the local area have received a small grant as part of this year’s Sport Relief Community Cash initiative.

“Some of the most meaningful changes to people’s lives are made at the grassroots of local communities. “All over the UK, local people are working hard to make a difference on their own doorsteps for people living tough lives and these grants show how a small amount of money can make a big difference.”

The South Yorkshire Community Foundation worked with Comic Relief and The Star to get cash to the groups that needed it most.

Ruth Willis, chief executive, said: “Thanks to the hard work of these groups, the money raised through Sport Relief can now get right to the heart of the local community and make a real difference where it is most needed.”
